‘We’re leaving now,’ said Sara, who had stayed along with the rest of the staff, whether they were on shift or not, to help dismantle the fete and settle the residents.

It had been a wonderful afternoon and now everyone, staff and residents alike, was exhausted. I was more than willing to accept when Sandra, buoyed up because she had secured reservations on two of the empty rooms, said I could take the next day off. That said, I wouldn’t be sleeping in too late because, knowing what the raffle and auction had raised, I was keen to start researching and planning. If I took my time and struck a bargain or two, pretty much everything on the activities wish list would be able to happen.

‘We thought we’d head down to the pub,’ said Pete, who looked happier than I’d ever seen him as Sara linked her arm through his. ‘Do you fancy it?’

‘On any other day I would,’ I smiled, ‘but I’m dead on my feet, so I’m going to head straight home.’

Eli had sent a message telling me not to worry about dinner as he’d got it all arranged, but obviously I wasn’t going to tell Pete and Sara that for fear of blowing our cover.

‘In that case,’ said Sara, stifling a yawn, ‘we’ll see you next week.’

She gave me a wink as she wandered off. She looked every bit as happy as Pete did and I found myself wishing for the day when Eli and I would be able to go public, like them.

‘All in good time,’ I wistfully reminded myself as I carried on stacking the last few chairs and considered how much easier it was going to be getting used to being a couple without the scrutiny of our well-meaning friends and neighbours, ‘all in good time.’
